The Natisone/Nadiža River
The Natisone/Nadiža (its name marks a stream that gushes through the surface) has several springs under the long mountain ridge between Veliki Muzec and Punta di Montemaggiore on the borderline region between Slovenia and Italy. Several streams soon come together as Črni potok/Rio Nero on the Slovenian side and as Rio Bianco/Beli potok on the Italian side. After only a few kilometres both streams join into the river Natisone/Nadiža.
From the confluence the river runs on the border between Slovenia and Italy towards the south. Under the village of Logje it turns east to Slovenia and near the settlement Kred makes a sharp turn towards the south into a 3-km-long and more than 1000-m-deep gorge between Mt. Matajur and Mt. Mija/Monte Mia. At the Robič border crossing it crosses the border to Italy and runs across the central part of Slavia Veneta, cutting deep into the Friuli Plain at Cividale del Friuli. After 60 km it ends in the river Torre/Ter, which soon flows into the Isonzo/Soča River to the south.
The river creates several small pools upstream. The Natisone is very clean and rich in animal species all the way to Cividale del Friuli.
It is one of the cleanest and warmest Alpine rivers.
